On January 12, 2005, the day after millions of viewers tuned in to the season finale of NBC's The Biggest Loser, on which a group of 12 contestants lost over 750 pounds, the department of Human Health Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005. The report, according to USDA secretary Ann Veneman, was designed to "address the epidemic of overweight and obesity."
This sixth edition of the Guidelines, the first of which was published in 1980, is more science-based then ever before and places emphasis on calorie control and physical activity. Both Veneman and HHS secretary Tommy Thompson emphasized the importance of physical activity (Thompson at one point during the press conference pulling out his pedometer to show the audience) combined with stricter attention to daily caloric intake. The Guidelines is intended to help Americans live a healthier lifestyle and decrease the risk of serious diseases through exercise and healthful eating.
So what about fad diets like Atkins and South Beach? According to secretary Veneman, when you look past the first two weeks of carb abandonment, they pretty much focus on some of the same things that the 2005 guidelines do. More and more, she stresses, dietary programs and recommendations are giving the same advice: eat a lot of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and keep your calories from fats low.
Americans spend about $42 billion on diet books and products annually, which means the new Guidelines certainly has a captive audience. The challenge, however, is making it available and accessible. For this reason they have made available a consumer brochure which includes highlights and important suggestions from the report.
The report is grouped into nine general topics:
One other important change to come from this year's Guidelines is the beginning of a revision to the food guidance system. Most people remember seeing the food pyramid in school cafeterias or on the back of cereal boxes, but come summer of 2005, get ready for a change. Based on the findings in this report, the current pyramid system is under revision and will be updated by the time Americans start easing back in to their skimpy summer wears.
