Common Complications of the Face Lift Procedure

The standard facelift continues to be a popular anti aging treatment for millions of men and women who want to reduce wrinkles and improve the contours of the face. The facelift can provide a dramatic change in one’s appearance by stretching out the skin and improving the overall texture and tone of the facial tissues to create a more youthful appearance.

As popular as this surgery is, the facelift is  one of the most extensive of all facial enhancement procedures and some people do experience several complications. If the facelift is not performed by an experienced, board-certified physician, the result can be a very unnatural look and even damage to key nerves and tissue in the sensitive facial area.

Common Complications Associated with a Face Lift

A face lift that is not performed using the right protocol can result in sagging skin, an uneven skin tone and even cause paralysis of key facial tissues. Other complications associated with a face lift include:

Loose skin – damaged nerve endings can result in sagging and loose skin that causes a tired look. This also results in lower collagen production, reducing the chances of natural healing and restoration of the skin’s tissue

Skin discoloration – a face lift can cause skin to become weak and vulnerable to damage, eventually leading into a discolored skin tone and an uneven surface. Without the right treatment after surgery, skin will continue to appear dark and dull; this may be prevented with chemical peels and other skin rejuvenation methods that result in the rapid rebuilding of skin tissues and improve skin elasticity overall.

Scars and wounds that do not heal – the face lift is a fairly extensive surgery that requires multiple incisions and may cause deep trauma to the face. If the face lift is not performed correctly, the tissues may not be positioned in the right way and result in a poor healing process.

Infection – without the appropriate tools and measures, an untrained physician may leave an incision site open to infection which may result in excessive bleeding and fluid retention.

Facial numbness – paralysis and facial numbness are common side effects of the facelift procedure but typically disappear within a few days. However, those who undergo bad facelift surgery may find that their face remains numb for longer than average.

Are There Alternative Options to the Standard Facelift?

If you’re not ready for the facelift procedure, there are no several innovative alternatives to the conventional facelift.

Laser skin resurfacing technologies can help create a drastic change for the face and neck areas, and work by targeting the facial tissues deep within the skin’s surface. Laser skin resurfacing works by injuring the skin’s tissues and triggering collagen production. After a few short weeks, the skin begins to rebuild and heal itself at a rapid pace and the result is a firmer, tighter and more toned appearance.

The ThermaCool Facelift is another option for those who do not want to undergo surgery for facial enhancement. The ThermaCool procedure encourages skin tissue to contract and heat is applied deep within the skin’s tissue to promote the natural renewal process.  The ThermaCool device can be used on both the neck and facial area to tighten and tone the skin in a natural way, and does not require a single incision.

Finding a licensed and experienced plastic surgeon is essential to the success of your facelift, and you may need to consult with several professionals in order to find the best match. Learning about the procedure and ensuring that you truly are ready to face the outcomes of the transformation are an essential part of your research process.
